The big secret the Priory knows the Church is covering up? Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalene and fathered a daughter, a descendent of which lives today unaware of their ancestry. They are portrayed as an evil cabal of Church officials seeking to kill members of the Priory of Sion, a secret group whose members over the centuries supposedly have included Sir Isaac Newton, Victor Hugo and "Lenny the V" himself. What we know is that Sauni¿re was shot by Silas (Paul Bettany), an albino monk controlled by Bishop Manuel Aringarosa (Alfred Molina) who is associated with the Catholic prelature Opus Dei. The pair discovers cryptic clues from the dead man written in ultraviolet ink near paintings, including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, that hints at a broader conspiracy and they flee to track down the truth with Fache in hot pursuit.
(The fact that Langdon has an auditorium full of people to provide alibis is unmentioned.) A comely police cryptologist, Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), arrives on the scene and takes Langdon into her confidence Sauni¿re was the grandfather that raised her after her parents were killed in an auto accident. The detective in charge, Fache (Jean Reno), suspects Langdon of the crime because he and the deceased were supposed to have drinks, but Langdon says he was stood up. The man, Jacques Sauni¿re (Jean-Pierre Marielle), has been shot and left lying naked with a pentacle cut into his chest, left in the position of a famous Leonardo da Vinci drawing, The Vitruvian Man. At the post-show book signing, he is summoned to the Louvre Museum to the scene of a grisly murder. For the few dozen people - including myself - who haven't read the book, Langdon (Tom Hanks) is a Harvard professor of "symbology" who is delivering a lecture in Paris.
